LastEditor

The editor you only have to learn once.

Write letters, reports, forms, sheets, slides and diagrams in one place. It works without a connection, keeps your text in a plain file you can read by hand, opens Word files and writes PDF.

Nothing to sign up for. Your documents stay on your device.

An invoice in LastEditor: boxes to fill in, a table of lines, and totals that work themselves out.

What it does, in plain words

Works offline

Open it on a train or in a cellar. Everything is on your device first; a connection is never needed to write.

Plain-text files

A document is a small text file (.pcf) that reads almost like Markdown. You can open it in any editor, keep it for decades, and nothing is locked in.

Word in, PDF out

Open .docx and LibreOffice files, keep working, and export a PDF that looks like the page you saw.

Forms that calculate

Boxes, dates, drop-downs and totals. An invoice adds itself up, and you can fill it in without touching the layout.

Sheets, slides, diagrams

Tables with formulas, charts from a table, slides to present, and diagrams written as a few lines of text.

Writing together, later

The format is built so that several people can edit one document and merge without a server deciding who is right. The editing comes first; the sharing follows.

Your language

English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese (Brazil), including spell-checking and hyphenation.

Calm by design

No account, no tracking, no pop-ups that interrupt you. Hover over any button to see what it would change before you press it.

A report: headings, quotations, links, and the page layout when you want it.
A table and a bar chart made from it, in the dark theme.

A sheet with tabs named Sales, Costs and Notes.

Test it out here

This is the real editor, not a video. It loads when you press the button (a few megabytes, once), and later it works offline.

Things to try

  1. Start a new document from a template (the invoice, for one) and change a quantity: the totals follow.
  2. Type / on an empty line to see the blocks you can add.
  3. Hover over Bold (or any button): you see what it would change before you press it.
  4. Change the interface language in the settings, for example to German.
  5. Turn off your network and reload: it still opens.

Open the full app

In the full app you can install it and open your own files.

About 7 MB the first time.

Questions

Where are my documents when I use it in the browser?

On your device, in a private storage area of your browser (the app calls it On this device). Nothing is sent to us. Clearing your browser's site data deletes them, so use Save as to keep a copy you control.

Can it save back to the file I opened?

That depends on the browser. Chrome and Edge on a computer can; the others cannot, and there Save keeps a copy on this device and hands you a copy to keep (on a phone, the share sheet, where you can pick Files, Drive or iCloud). The app says which applies, quietly, the first time.

Note: Safari clears the stored data of a website you have not visited for seven days, unless you added it to the Dock or Home Screen. Add it, or save copies. Some of this table is worked out from what each browser promises and has not been tried on every device yet.

Does it work offline?

Yes, after the first visit: the app keeps itself in your browser, and a quiet note offers a reload when a new version is ready.

Who sees my files?

Nobody but you sees your files. There is no account and no tracking; see the privacy page.
